SMI's newspaper backfile and sub-contract microfilming conform to the following specifications: Preparation: - Prior to microfilming, newspapers are thoroughly checked for completeness, condition and chronological order. Missing or illegible sections will be replaced if possible. If replacement pages are not available, an incomplete target will be filmed in place of any missing pages. Filming: - The master microfilm is a 35mm, high-contrast Kodak silver halide, polyester base film manufactured to ANSI, NEH, and Federal Standards. - The minimum resolution (the camera's ability to record fine detail) is 112 line pairs. Newspapers are filmed in a standard two page per frame format, (unless otherwise requested), at a reduction ratio not exceeding 20:1. Targets That Appear On Each Roll of Film: - Start of roll.....Marks the beginning of each roll of film. - Resolution test (two targets).....Checks the camera's focus. - Density (three targets).....Used to check the contrast of the microfilm image to assure maximum readability prior to duplicating. - Bibliography.....Lists the name of the newspaper, city of origin, and the inclusive dates of publication (dates are also displayed on each frame). - Copyright.....Outlines the legal rights of the publisher. - Notice of Omission Responsibility.....Indicates SMI microfilming policy. - Notice of Best Copy Available.....Advises of poor contrast, smeared ink, bleed through and other printing anamolies. Indicates that no better copy is available. - Certificate of Authenticity.....A certificate signed by the camera operator, attesting that the newspaper submitted for microfilming is genuine. - End-of-roll.....Marks the end of each roll of film. Other Targets That May Appear: - Incomplete.....Indicates issues, sections, or pages that are missing and not available for microfilming. - Refilm.....Indicates a page has been refilmed in an attempt to improve the quality of the image. - Damaged Originals.....Specifies that the original was filmed in a damaged state. - Notice of Holiday.....Indicates a skip in publication due to a holiday. Inspection: - After each master negative roll has been processed it is inspected twice. First mechanically to insure that the resolution (focus) and density (contrast) specifications are met and then visually, to insure that every page is in focus, that no pages are missing and that the pages are in chronological order. Storage: - The preservation master negatives are stored in preservation quality, vented film containers and maintained in our climate controlled and CCTV monitored facilities.
