All backfile newspaper issues are tracked internally by SMI's state-of-the-art bar
code system which insures proper routing and sequencing during storage and microfilming.
All material is carefully handled and meticulously microfilmed to produce
images of optimal clarity. The tracking system also insures that newspapers
that have been microfilmed, and are targeted for return to the point
of origin, are not inadvertently destroyed. Bound newspapers will be cut or removed from binders to insure that all copy can be filmed without distortion and that the density will be as even as possible. If requested, newspapers can be rebound at an additional charge. The master 35mm microfilm of a newspaper's backfile issues can used to process vesicular, silver or diazo duplicates as requested by the customer. The master microfilm can be stored free of charge, in archival approved cannisters, in our fireproof, temperature controlled vault facilities; master microfilm that is stored in SMI's vault remains the property of the newspaper's publisher. Our attention to maintaining ideal storage conditions ensures that all titles entrusted to us will survive for centuries to come. SMI also specializes in microfilming clipping files. Microfilmed clipping files can save over 98% of storage space in comparison to traditional fold and file methods. Additionally, microfilmed clipping files insure against misfiling, deterioration and unauthorized use.
