Southwest Micropublishing has been a pioneer in the development of hardware, software, and procedures for digitizing large scale microfilmed collections of archives, books, and journals.

SMI is deeply committed to enhancing the artifactual value of any organization's microfilm collection through the use of digital technology.  Our state-of-the-art equipment insures that microfilmed images of archives, books, and journals will be digitized at the highest resolution possible.  Utilizing nextScan scanners, SMI can convert 16mm, 35mm and 105mm microfilm into any file format, for distribution on text-searchable CD's or tape.  Additionally, digitized files can be transmited via FTP or VPN.

Our Minolta PS 3000's are face-up publication scanners that provide clear, non-distorted digital files of bound volumes.  The PS 3000 also compensates for page curvature and eliminates any centerline shadows.  Automatic edge detection masks out borders and the area beyond the page for clean, noise-free results.  An adjustable cradle provides gentle, stress-free support to the spine of rare, fragile and deteriorating books.  The 11"x17" bed area allows for the scanning of grouped two-page spreads that produce intact digital files of charts, maps, graphics, and artwork.
